David Posner grew up as the youngest and smallest of his classmates, always left out of their conversations about things they thought him too young to understand. In his last term at college, as he was studying for the entrance exam to Oxford, he came to the realization that he was gay (mostly because he was in love with his classmate, who showed no interest in him in return).

He made it into Oxford on a scholarship, but he suffered several breakdowns during his time there and was actually sectioned once. He managed to finish with a second and after some uncertainty about his future, went on to complete a teaching course.

Since then, he has taught literature, mostly at boys' schools. He's a bit of a stock figure. He does a wonderful school play, for example.

He's not happy, but he's not unhappy about it.
